Someone keeps stealing empty bottles from high school students in Vulcan.

Students have been diligently collecting empty bottles every week and storing them out behind the County Central High School.

Twice now the large black garbage bags filled with empty's have been stolen.

Support Staff member Leanne Sydenham says whoever's doing it is making off with a lot of bottles.

"This is twice now in about a month, a month and a half now. In total, I would say a good 20, 20 to 50 bags."

Sydenham says it's really disappointing because the students work so hard at collecting them and keeping them out of the landfill.

"Once a week, all the kids, they go around to all the classrooms and all our recycling bins and collect all the recycling.  They put them into bags, and they're taught to put clean bags into each bin and then take them all to the back of the school.  And then we try and make arrangements with one of the high school kids to take them to the bottle depot when they have a chance. All the funds would go into social events and whatnot because not all the kids can afford these social events. So, we do what we can to help everyone, and this is twice now the bags have disappeared."

She says it's been tough on the students.

"It's been frustrating for them. They're trying so hard to be environmentally conscious and do their part for the school and they're proud of what they're doing. And now, it's cut short for them. You know, they were hoping to do a dance for free."

Sydenham explains why they have to store the full garbage bags outside of the school.

"We would have a bin to lock everything up but again we're a small community.  We don't always have the budget for bins. I would love for a family that would donate some time of a storage bin for us, but we do what we can. We can't store these bottles inside the school because it's unhygienic to have 50 bags of pop bottles in a room then you'll get ants and bugs and mice."

"We do have the food bank, we do have FCSS... there's so much help out there it's just sad when they take it away from the kids when they're trying so hard to do something at the school."

If you know who's responsible for the theft or if you can help out, you're asked to call the school at 403-485-2223.
