Okotoks player is now the face of the Penticton Vees

Former Okotoks Oiler and hometown kid, Conyr Hellyer has been named as the 59th team captain in Penticton Vees franchise history.

Hellyer is no stranger to Okotoks as he played his minor hockey days in the town and was born in Okotoks. His final season with the Okotoks Oilers U15 AAA is nothing to brush off as he posted 61 points in just 36 games during the 2019-2020 season.

Two years later Hellyer would get his first taste of Junior A hockey playing with the Okotoks Oilers while they were still a part of the AJHL. During the two-year stint with the Oilers, he was over a point per game posting 93 points in 91 games, 44 of his points came from goals.

Last year Hellyer made his way over to the Penticton Vees of the BCHL and was named their assistant captain. He put up 28 points in 43 games and added another nine points in 22 games during their playoff run which saw the Vees fall to the Surrey Eagles in six games.

"We have had great captains in the past and that tradition will continue. Conyr plays the game the way I want all our players to play and brings a professional presence off the ice," said Vees President, General Manager, and Head Coach Fred Harbinson in a media release. 

"Nolan and Brock each will provide support to Conyr in their own ways. I have complete confidence in this leadership group and believe the rest will follow as we face the new challenges of the BCHL’s new-look Interior Division." 

Hellyer is committed to Arizona State University after 2024-2025 season with the Vees, but has his mind set in helping his current team go for another Fred Page Cup championship after not being able to finish the three-peat in the 2023-2024 season.

"It’s an honour to have the opportunity to be the captain for such a special program like the Vees. What I learned last season is leadership is a collective effort and guys with or without letters will help in their own way, as we look to bring back a Fred Page Cup to Penticton," commented Hellyer.
