The USDA's new Product of USA labelling rule has been finalized for voluntary labelling of  U.S. meat, poultry, and egg products.

The rule stipulates in order to qualify for the label meat must be derived from animals born, raised, slaughtered and processed in the U.S.

President of the Canadian Cattle Association Nathan Phinney says it's something they've been opposing for years.

"Sometimes they're born in the U.S., brought to Canada to be fed and processed in the U.S.," he says. "Some cattle here are brought up and processed here and under some circumstances, they go south of the border and are processed there."

He says as critical infrastructure continues to be strained they need to be able to move cattle back and forth.

Canada has a $1.1 billion World Trade Organization ruling from 2015 that allows for retaliation if there are trade violations.
