Rowan House Emergency Shelter recently tried a provincial fundraising program for the first time.
In December, the non-profit took part in the provincial "Crowdfunding Alberta" program.
Crowdfunding Alberta provides a platform for non-profit organizations to run easy and efficient fundraising campaigns.
Rowan House's executive director Linette Soldan says the province also matches a portion of the funds.
"Once a year you can do this, and they will provide you up to $15,000 annually, depending on how much you raise, but it will be capped out at $15,000. This year, when we found out about the crowdfunding, we thought 'Oh, perfect timing for the holiday season. That's when we launched our campaign. We started it around November 28th, but our main focus was for the month of December."
The campaign saw $37,559 in donations, with the Government of Alberta matching an additional $11,268.
Soldan says the funds will assist with much of the day-to-day operations for the organization.
"The funds that were raised through that campaign will help with our operating budget, our programming, staff training, wages and benefits, and research and development so that we're always making sure we're keeping current and in alignment for best practices for domestic violence and abuse."
She extended thanks to the community for the support for this campaign and countless others.
"Without this support, we would not be able to have the impact we do on our community, and so, I have to say a special thank you to everybody in our community, we're so grateful for the donations, and also helping us continue to raise awareness for domestic violence and abuse. The generosity inspires us every day in the work that we do here at Rowan House."
She says they plan to run another campaign through Crowdfunding Alberta this holiday season.
