The Foothills Falcons dominated the podium at the South Central Zone Championships

The South Central Zone Championships happened this past weekend in Airdrie, and the Foothills Falcons basketball teams earned their places on the podium.

An hour before the senior boys were to tip off for their first game, they found out that the rankings for the tournament had been appealed and changed, causing a change in the final tournament lineup.

Through the appeal, a team from Calgary was replaced with a team from Edmonton.

Despite the last-minute changes, though, the boys handled themselves well during the tournament.

During their first game, they took on the team from W.H. Croxford High School in Airdrie.

With an overwhelming defense, the Falcons were able to get an early lead and consistently build upon it throughout the game.

The Falcons beat Croxford 87-51, which sent them to the Championship game versus Holy Trinity Academy (HTA).

Their game against the Knights was as successful as their first game.

Even with a gymnasium packed with loud fans, both teams were having troubles getting the ball into the net.

After their offense struggled with low shooting percentages and too many turnovers, the Falcons fell to the Knights 67-56, resulting in the Falcons taking home Silver, while the boys from HTA took the top spot on the podium.

"I am so proud of this team and the season we had. It was the highest-ranked team that we have had since I have been coaching here at Foothills," said Coach Amron Gwilliam in a release. "I will miss seeing these boys every day and getting to coach them, especially our grade twelves."

The senior girls Falcons continued to play as dominantly in this tournament as they had throughout the season.

During their first game, they took on the team from Chestermere, who were the superior team.

Even though the Falcons were outsized, their offense showed precision, and their defense had enough intensity to get ahead 28-14 by the end of the first quarter.

The Falcons kept up that pace and won with a score of 94-32.

During the championship game, the girls competed against the host W.H. Croxford, where they got ahead early.

After playing consistently and with amazing defense, the Falcons beat Croxford 61-35, earning the top podium spot.

The girls are heading to Red Deer this weekend to compete in the Provincial Championships.
