November is Family Violence Prevention month

Purple is the colour of peace, survival and courage for November - Family Violence Prevention Month.

Linette Soldan, Executive Director with the Rowan House Society said they have plans to raise awareness, conversation and funds for the women's shelter.

Soldan said it's a reminder that ending domestic abuse starts with just one small action such as wearing purple or attending events to show support.

Two events have been scheduled during the month of November.

"Our first one is November 4th. It's going to be a matinee in Okotoks and it's going to be a family movie and it's, brace yourself it's a classic... E.T."

Yes, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and it'll be at Okotoks Cinema with the movie starting at 11:00 a.m.

They're asking for a minimum donation of $5 per person and they also have another event planned for November 18.

"And it's called Rhythms for Rowan and that is going to see some local artists come together and they're going to be performing. Brettyn Rose, there's also going to be Chase Morgan who's going to be coming and some other local artists."

Also, at 8:30 a.m. on November 1, Mayor Tanya Thorn will be signing a proclamation acknowledging November as Family Violence Prevention Month.

The Municipal Centre will also be lit up in purple to raise awareness and shine a light on domestic violence and abuse.

Rowan House Society provides crisis intervention, long-term support, and preventative education to break the cycle of domestic abuse.
