Legion banners back up in Okotoks

Banners honouring veterans can again be seen along Veterans Way in Okotoks.

The banner program is run by the Okotoks Royal Canadian Legion Branch #291 and has been going annually since 2019.

Walter Tonn, 3rd Vice President and banner committee chairperson says each of the banners is sponsored by Okotoks residents to honour a loved one who served in the military.

"The banners are veterans both who have passed away or are still alive... It gives you, usually, the regimental names, the years they were serving, and a few other details."

He says the Town of Okotoks plays a big role in facilitating the program each year.

"We get them made through Spy Design, and the town puts them up, takes them down, and puts them in individual tubes so they're protected all year."

Those interested in sponsoring a banner can contact the Legion, though Tonn says space is limited at the moment.

"We've only got two poles left so we can only do two more banners before the town gets approval from, I guess it would be Fortis, for the poles. We're almost at our maximum right now and I have three more people who have requested. Basically, there's room for one more and that will be it until we can further expand."

The banners can be seen all along Veterans Way and Milligan Drive down to 32 St.
