The Alberta Utilities Commission has approved a huge wind farm in Vulcan County, but with a list of conditions.

The project will see 83 wind turbines on over 7,000 hectares of privately owned farmland near Lomond.

ABO Wind, the company behind the project, says the project will displace approximately 795,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and would provide enough power for the equivalent of 240,000 Alberta homes.

The AUC's decision includes a list of 12 conditions that are aimed at mitigating local landowners' concerns.

The company must shut off its turbines during aerial crop spraying while there are also restrictions on road use around the local cemetery and along school bus routes.

ABO Wind also has to notify the Commission within the first 12 months of operation, as well as its response, when it gets complaints about "shadow flicker," which happens when the sun casts a moving shadow as it shines through rotating blades.

The company says the project should be completed by April 30, 2024.
