For some, nothing beats the magic of having a real Christmas tree.

The Okotoks Fire Department is reminding residents of a few safety tips that should be kept in mind when setting up a real tree indoors.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks Fire Chief, says it's best to pick out the freshest one when you head to the tree lot.

"Check the needles, check the sap, make sure it's a fresh tree. When you put it in the stand make sure it's stable and that it can hold a fair amount of water just to make sure you're keeping the tree and the needles fresh so they're not easily flammable and last a lot longer as well."

Thevenot adds it's important trees are kept away from heat sources to avoid them becoming a fire hazard.

"Don't put them close to any heat sources like a fire place or candles and even a TV," he explains. "Just keep it away from any type of heat source that would draw out the water and freshness from the tree. Shut off lights on the tree at night so you don't have any problems around drying it out as well."

Accidents can be common this time of year with ladders when it comes to decorating trees and putting lights up outdoors as well. Thevenot recommends checking ground stability before setting up ladders and climbing on them.
