As our weather changes from fall to winter so should the equipment in our vehicles. Preparing your vehicle for winter should include more than just putting on winter tires. Adding a winter emergency car kit with some essentials will definitely make a difference if issues arise.

Chief Driving Instructor for AMA, Wayne McLachlan suggests a few basic items to keep in your vehicle. "It's a good idea to have a set of booster cables, a flash light, first aide kit, a shovel, warm clothing and a high visibility vest in case you are stranded along a roadway and have to be out." says McLachlan

He lists other essentials items including a warm blanket, non-perishable food items, a candle and something for traction like sand or dry kitty litter can help if you are stranded on the road.

Owner Operator of Skills Driving School, Linda Proctor, says there is a handy item right in the front seat of your vehicle that can be used as traction. "You can use your front carpet. it actually has a lot of grip on it, and if you turn it upside down and put it under your tires it can help you to get out of a slippery situation."

McLachlan also says a fully charged cell phone will certainly help in an emergency situation. "Have your cell phone with you and fully charged then if you are stranded you have the means by which to have someone know where you are located and potentially find you quicker." advised McLachlan.

McLachlan also said planning your route ahead of time and slowing down will make traveling wintry roads safer.
