There's not long left to apply for the Town of Okotoks' Urban Deer Task Force.

The task force, comprised of seven volunteer community members and one town liaison, will serve an advisory role, reporting to council with possible strategies regarding the deer of Okotoks.

Parks Manager Christa Michailuck says the group won't be tasked with figuring out a way to get rid of deer, but rather they will be exploring a broad number of possible strategies to avoid confrontations with local deer.

"The purpose of the task force is simply to review all the options and make recommendations to council on what we could do that would reduce conflicts between urban deer and citizens going forward."

She says there's a reason the task force will be comprised of residents.

"It's a very transparent process, and it's actually part of our public participation strategy to engage citizens in a task force like this to come up with community solutions by community members."

The Urban Deer Task Force will operate over a one year period, as outlined in the terms of reference.

Michailuck says the town would like applicants to be community members, and have specific experience, education, or knowledge relevant to wildlife or conservation issues.
