There was a true display of talent at Picnic at the Piano on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018 at noon! Hosted at Olde Towne Plaza in Okotoks, Picnic at the Piano features different artists performing songs for the general public for free. During my time there, I had the honor of hearing Mark perform O Canada for those in attendance. The twenty-three-year-old has an incredible story: despite his genuine talent and performance skills, Mark has never read a note of music in his life, nor has he ever attended a single music lesson! Mark plays all notes by ear and so he requires no guidance (i.e., sheet music).

While attending high school at Holy Trinity Academy, Mark stated that he used to play O Canada every Friday morning for the whole school. He also proudly told me that during his graduation commencement in spring of 2014, he played the piano live for over 1 200 individuals and received a standing ovation! His confidence and love for music truly touched me as it showed me how far passion and kindness can take someone. Mark's love for music was sparked by his grandfather (or "Papa", as Mark calls him), Lawrence who sadly, passed away in 2003. In his will, Lawrence gifted to Mark his piano and Mark has not stopped playing since!

Working together with Foothills Advocacy in Motion Society (or FAIM - a not-for-profit organization which supports adults with developmental disabilities in and around the Foothills area), Mark has learned to develop his gift with the help of helpful job coaches and team leaders. Along with their help and the love and support of his family, Mark's passion and talents have grown. Be sure to check out the video of him playing the national anthem at Picnic at the Piano along with other wonderful photos!

Mark says he prefers playing the keyboard over the piano as he can transpose the keyboard into different keys rather than having to do it manually as in a grand or upright piano. Mark says he loves to play country music and his favorite artist is George Strait, widely regarded as the "King of Country". In his spare time, Mark enjoys spending time with his younger sister who also shows a deep interest in the musical arts: she plays clarinet for the Calgary Stampede show band. It is truly a family composed of musical artists!
