High River council's taking another stab at bringing fibre optic service to the community.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says they've been talking to a lot of providers.

"The Town has engaged anybody that's interested in providing Internet fibre service to High River to come to council to explain what their plans might be for High River, so we've had Shaw and Telus and Bell and a couple other entities come in and we're listening to everybody to sort of figure out who's doing what and where we fit in," Snodgrass explained.

He wants residents to know that after the last attempt didn't succeed, they haven't given up.

"After we went through our little exercise of seeing if the Town could be the ISP (internet service provider) and have fibre in downtown High River as our own utility, after we went through that and knowing how expensive that project got, after we abandoned doing that, that's why we've started to engage with anybody that has anything to do with fibre to come in and talk to us."

He says they're looking at all kinds of models, from having one company come in and do it or the Town becoming the utility holder with residents signing up with the Town and using a third party to negotiate with Shaw, Bell or Telus over the use of their networks.

He doubts that someone would just come into town and put in all the infrastructure, at least at this point.

"That's what we're trying to figure out, what is the best way to try and get the best internet service that we possibly can and it's not easy, it's a very complicated and difficult thing even to just figure out where the town of High River actually fits into that."

There's no timeline for getting it done.
