The Town of High River is flying flags at half-mast this week and have been so since Sunday, September 10.

It's in observation of the Firefighters' National Memorial Day, which was Sunday.

It's also in observance of the late Honourable Mr. David Russell, former MLA, who passed away last month at the age of 92 on August 17th.

Russell served as MLA in the Calgary Elbow riding for five terms retiring in 1989. Russell also served as Deputy Premier from 1986 to 1989.

The flags are also lowered to half-mast in recognition of the passing of the late Honourable Mr. Neville Sydney Roper, former MLA who passed away August 28 of this year. Roper also served as Mayor of Rimbey for one term. He also served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. He passed away at the age of 101.

The town shared the following message on their social media page: 'Our hearts are with their family, loved ones, friends and colleagues.

The flags will remain at half-mast until Monday, September 18.
