The Calgary Stampede officially broke ground on its expansion plans this week.

Chairman Steve Allan says while they're making the new year-round facilities, the organization is not forgetting its roots.

"Agriculture is of course our roots, which go back to 1886 when we were an agricultural fair on this very site", he says, "and so we will have a new agricultural building that will be on the southwest corner of the park, we will take out the old barn which is nearly a hundred years old, we will use the whole park for agriculture".

Allan says he hopes the facilities will help bring an urban-rural connection to the Stampede year-round.
