It might be possible to have a drink in your favorite park this summer.

The Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction, Grant Hunter, has tabled Bill 2, which is aimed at loosening restrictions on public consumption in parks.

"This would mean that park owners would allow public liquor consumption without food in designated picnic areas within their parks," he says. "This would apply to municipal parks as well as picnic areas in Provincial Parks and recreational areas."

He says as long as there's signage that clearly shows it's allowed, visitors will be able to have a drink in the park.

Hunter says it's all about allowing landowners and municipalities the right to make their own decisions without having to go to Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis for permission.

There are already some Provincial Parks where liquor can be consumed, this change would open it up to all parks, except those where there is specific signage opposing it.

One other minor change allows liquor to be used in raffles.

The change goes into effect once the Bill receives Royal Ascent.
