This week marked Drowning Prevention Week in Okotoks.

Alberta RCMP has a number of tips for residents to ensure they stay safe while in and around water this summer.

Fraser Logan, Media Relations Manager for Alberta RCMP, says the most important tip for boat-owners is to avoid drugs and alcohol when on the water.

"The number one concern for us if you're operating a boat, or spending any time near or in the water, is to not do so under the influence of drugs or alcohol," Logan said. "It just affects your judgement and reaction time, and it doesn't matter how experienced of a swimmer you are if you don't wear a life jacket it's just going to affect your safety."

Logan says another key tip is to be prepared if you know you're heading out on the water. That includes keeping an eye on the weather forecast.

"We've had some very severe weather here in Alberta over the last couple months," he said. "It's always important to check that forecast. You never know how isolated some of these severe weather conditions can be."

He encourages everyone to exit the water if they see lightning.

"You just never know what's going to happen," he said.

Logan adds that it's important for residents to educate themselves because water safety is a shared responsibility.

"If we can just reduce the number of drownings and fatalities this summer, I think that would just make our summer that much better."

The complete list of tips provided by RCMP for water safety are provided here:

-          Never operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, as they can affect a person’s judgement and reaction time.

-          Always make sure everyone on board, even experienced swimmers, are wearing life jackets.

-          Always bring emergency supplies like extra food, clothes, and a cell phone.

-          Always check the weather forecast before going on the water. Changing weather conditions can be extremely dangerous while on the water.

-          Always know the area you will be operating in and share your itinerary with someone, so that if there is an emergency you can be found quickly.
