Some good news and bad news for the town of Turner Valley.

The good is they're getting $27,000 from the "Friends of the Dr. Lander Memorial Pool" Society.

The bad news is after 21 years the society is disbanding.

Mayor Barry crane says the society's been a great organization over the years.

"Just one of those points where the volunteer base for that particular group has dwindled over the years. It was time to wrap it up. Their initial goals were all achieved from where they started and maintained."

The money was what the society had left in their coffers before disbanding.

Over their 21 years of service, the society raised $58,838 for improvements and additions to the pool as well as accessing and securing grants from various levels of government to the tune of $63,158.

Crane says that's a terrific amount of money the Town used for improvements and upgrades over the years.

"And that's where the heart of volunteerism truly lies. It's in taking ownership of something that you have pride in and something that I see when you look at the list of achievable's that volunteers do. And in this context literally they built the pool. The built everything that went with it."

In a release, the Town's CAO, Todd Sharpe praised the Society and their volunteers.

"The Friends of the Pool organization has worked tirelessly and without seeking recognition for over 20 years to enrich our cherished pool. The Town of Turner Valley Council, administration and its residents have benefited from their profound dedication and extraordinary work in raising funds. We offer our sincere thanks and deep gratitude to these individuals who have so unselfishly donated their time, talents and funds to the Town.”

The Town says the $27,000 will be applied to upgrades to the canopies over the bleachers and in the picnic area of the spray park.
