The presence of smoke throughout the Foothills has resulted in poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Environment Canada has put Okotoks, High River and Claresholm under a special air quality alert.

An improvement in air quality conditions is expected by Wednesday.

Even at low concentrations, wildfire smoke can pose a health risk to everyone. It is within everyone's control to take measures to minimize their exposure to such smoke.

Individuals with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant individuals, and those who work outdoors face a higher risk of experiencing health issues due to wildfire smoke. It is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider regarding the development of a management plan for wildfire smoke events, ensuring an adequate supply of necessary medications at home, and carrying these medications with you during the wildfire season.

If you or someone in your care experiences discomfort in breathing or feels unwell, it is recommended to reduce or cease physical activity.
