Okotoks RCMP responded to a report of a missing swimmer in the Highwood River in Foothills County this evening.

An RCMP release says a male in their early 20s jumped into the river from a ledge, briefly resurfacing, before going back underwater. The male did not resurface again.

Multiple witnesses entered the water in order to assist the swimmer, but were unable to locate them. RCMP say no other swimmers were injured.

According to the release, the male's identity is not being released pending next of kin notification.

Multiple services, including RCMP, CPS, HAWCS helicopter, and Foothills Fire Department, responded to the scene, to assist in the search.

Foothills Fire Water Rescue boats dragged the area, but the body remained missing when investigators suspended the search Sunday evening.

RCMP say the search will continue Monday morning with assistance from the Central Alberta Rescue Diving Society (CARDS) dive team.
