A weekend bottle drive is just one of the ways the Okotoks Mavericks Swim Club is keeping busy these days.

Since their return to the water in September, the Mavericks, like all athletic teams and clubs, have had to face their share of setbacks thanks to the Coronavirus.

Head Coach Todd Melton says they're just glad to be back at it.

"We're back at about 80 per cent pool time this year, which we're thankful for because when you look across the country and even within our province, we fared pretty well."

With official competitions off the table, Melton says they've been making due with what they have in order to sharpen that competitive edge.

"We don't have any competitions lined up until at least the new year. We're kind of waiting to hear what's going on with that. We're planning on doing some kind of virtual competitions with other clubs. We host a time trial, and then we compare times."

Their bottle drive, set to take place Saturday, October 17, is definitely a departure from their usual fundraising events.

Melton says it's pretty well suited to COVID rules.

"Our hands are kind of tied with what we can do. We usually put on an auction or events like that and we can no longer do that, so this is probably our best way to get donations."

Those wanting to contribute are invited to leave a bag of empties out between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on their porch, driveway or curb.

As far as the swim club goes, funding will be used for gear as well as digital equipment for training.

A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Okotoks Food Bank Association.
