Over the Labour Day long weekend, the ball diamonds in Okotoks were full as slo-pitch teams met in the NSA Canada Slo-Pitch Pay it Forward Tournament.

And local team, The Tailgators cleaned up to win the Rec 1 Championship and a $4,025.00 paycheque.

High Riveritte, Ron Nimilowicth says the team had to come together first before making it into the playoffs.

"We went two and two in the round robin and we didn't even think we were going to make into the A division but we qualified for A in third.  And then we jelled as a team...and went undefeated in the playoffs and mercied every single team.  We were plus 66 in the playoffs."

Nimilowicth led the team on the mound along with solid defense and a lot of singles.

"Our defense was flawless...our big hitters, in all 10 games only hit 6 homeruns all weekend so we just base hit everybody to death."

Nimilowicth also was a standout on the mound averaging only 4.5 hits per game.

He also picked up the team MVP award, fitting as he plans on retiring after this season.

"After forty-some years of playing slo-pitch I am hanging them up. I can't go out a better way."

The Tailgators are now looking forward to the NSA Canada Slo-Pitch League Championships.
