The new Okotoks Public Library finally opened its doors this week.

Their new location in the Arts & Learning Campus provides about 40 per cent more square footage when compared to their previous location across its two floors.

Acting manager Sarah Gillie says it's an exciting time for library staff, though they've been kept pretty busy all week.

"The staff have been really excited, although we are adjusting to the new space, so we are experiencing a lot of changes, we're trying something, it might not work, we make adjustments. Just getting used to that new space."

Staff have been busy dealing with returns, with around 10,000 items checked out during the interim month when the library was closed during the move.

They've still got some space to fill here and there, with plans to purchase more furniture and art to fill the wall space.

That's not to say the place is empty; seating is abundant, with long winding couches, communal fireside seating, diner-style booths next to windows overlooking Riverside Drive, and plenty of individual seating for those who prefer a more private library experience.

They also have a few sections dedicated to certain demographics, like a children's section and adjoining play area, and a well-stocked teen section brimming with graphic novels, manga, and young adult fiction.

For Gillie, there are too many highlights to count.

"We have extra programming space, so when we do start planning public programming, we have a total of four spaces we can offer, we have two small rooms we offer free of charge for the public to use for free study or tutoring. One of the things I'm excited about is that we have more lounge furniture in the space. there's lots of space to spread out, you can come and do work, you can come and study, we still have our public computers, there's plenty of space for everyone."

They're welcoming locals who want to come and explore the new facility, and for those who'd like a little more guidance within the new space, they're hosting some drop-in tours in the next few days.
