Seniors were serenaded by a group of local singers and an Irish dancer in Okotoks on Wednesday.

The special out-door performance by a few talented students from The Voice Studio of Naomi Koch was music to the ears for seniors at Heartland Retirement Residence.

The Voice Studio owner Naomi Koch said bringing entertainment to seniors to cheer up their day was fulfilling to the performers as well.

"It was just a good community thing to do and it was really nice for the students to do that as well" explained Koch.

After seeing other musicians entertaining in other areas Koch thought it would be nice to do something in our community and when she called a few of her students they were all thrilled to perform.

Koch said this week would have been the start of their festival and competition and giving the students a place to perform combined with the fact that seniors are so isolated made the event a perfect opportunity to give back to the community.

Although it wasn't specifically planned for it Koch says the idea coincided nicely with Seniors Week.

Koch says the current pandemic has presented challenges for holding competitions and festivals for students but it has also created new ideas for entertainers to showcase their talents.

"It's kind of interesting how this covid thing has changed our way of thinking and has given the opportunity outside of competition or festival." said Koch.

Koch organized a few singers and an Irish dancer to entertain outside of the building for a few hours and she said the success of the event has her looking for other opportunities in the future.

Koch said the students are enjoying giving of themselves to the audience and adding charity in their repertoire is a good thing.
