A local business owner is warning others of a scam making the rounds that involves the High River Legion.

Rae Farmer, who owns Rae's Fineline Moving, says he was approached in late January about buying ads to be placed on the bulletin board at the Legion.

A senior came to his house to make the deal and Farmer gave him $200 of the $600 he was looking for, with a promise to pay the rest later.

Farmer says afterwards, when he had a chance to think about it more, he became suspicious.

"Something wasn't adding up. He was talking that he was representing the High River Legion. The sign that he showed me was from Lethbridge and the contract had the heading of the Calgary Legion. Now, the phone number on the heading of the Calgary Legion does not exist."

He says he checked with the High River Legion who were unaware of any plan to sell advertising space at the Legion.

He says their staff even checked around with other Legion's to see if any such campaign existed, he says they told him it didn't.

Farmer says the man then called him back Tuesday, February 4, looking for the balance of the cash.

"Right after I hung up the phone with you, about five minutes later the gentleman called me asking if he could come get his money. I didn't answer, I wanted it to go to voicemail so the police would have a record of it. So I went and filed my police report this (Tuesday) morning. They told me they'd assign a police officer to it."

Farmer says he wants others to be aware of this scam and avoid falling into the same trap he did.

He says police are investigating.
