Have you ever heard that one song that evokes the same memory every time?

December 31st, New Year's Eve I heard a song called "La La Love" by a local artist named Eugenio.

The song, described as "a simple love song to remind ourselves that there is still good in every situation," sent my mind back to comfortable moments reminiscing about past love or the feeling of sipping hot cocoa during a quiet snowfall in the foothills.

Every time I’ve heard it since then I picture the same scenario in my head and I kinda wondered why that was. 

According to an article by Tiffany Jenkins of BBC, the hippocampus accompanied by the frontal cortex of the brain plays a large part in determining what we remember. 

In regards to music bringing back a certain memory, when people listen to music it triggers parts of the brain that evoke emotions.  There are implicit and explicit memories.  Explicit memories are simple memories such as what you did 5 minutes ago, basically anything in your conscious mind.  Implicit memories are memories stored in the unconscious, yet they can still be retrieved by our conscious minds.

This might be why Eugenio wrote this song heading into 2021. Taking moments to just... remember. 

Originally from Edmonton, he moved to Calgary in his youth. He has spent time in the foothills in and around Okotoks and High River before settling back down in Calgary. Eugenio divides his time between music and his own Videography/Photography company. Though a lot of time goes into his job he says music has and always will be in his life. 

"I've been doing this for like since I was a kid. Essentially, I knew that I wanted to be in music, of course, right, but as you get older you learn and grasp on the different things. Of course, trying to get a career trying to choose a safe path and all, but in the end... I did choose. My music is always a part of what I do."

His latest song "La La Love" (available everywhere) was written for the 2021 new year and is described by Eugenio as a simple love song, but it was a message he felt needed to be heard 

"I just I wrote this like really fast but felt like I needed to get something out there just before the new year, you know. And I felt like this was a great message. It's a simple love song, but there's a direct message about you know seeing the good in every situation ... Tough times and bad experiences. We just tend to forget about the good." 

This isn't his first song. Eugenio has released music all throughout 2020 and even spent time overseas as a recording artist. 

"Just over a decade ago I was actually touring in Asia at one point and I was actually signed with a record label, but then realizing in the end... Was this just what I wanted at the time? But you know, obviously, we live and learn and we experience things. But I didn't stop with my music ...  I continued to write. I continue to, you know, learn and to grow as an artist."

He is excited about 2021, not only for a new music video out soon but he is in the works creating a musical duo with his good friend Julia. 

The group Julia & Eugenio is made up of well... him and his friend Julia! 

"I actually met her through work. I was hired at a different dance company and I was doing video work for them and photography and she was actually working the front desk and of course wearing masks. All I can see your eyes right? I mean, captivating eyes. Of course, right? And but like you know, I took a break and we started talking and stuff and someone else was in the room as well. We just started talking about my music."

They got together to work on music and it all came naturally.

"Something that really hit it off with the two of us is that we both love musicals and we have a musical theater background. So you know, I perform with the youth singers of Calgary she performed with the Young Canadians. She did the grandstand show, you know she was with Storybook Theater. I was just like, I think we have something so she loved the idea and we got together."
