AHS declares E. coli outbreak over

The Calgary-area E. coli outbreak is officially over.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has announced that the final three sites are no longer under "outbreak" status as of last week.

It was originally declared on September 4 and led to the closure of 11 childcare facilities including Vik Academy in Okotoks.

By the end, there were 446 cases linked to the outbreak, with 38 children and one adult hospitalized.

All patients are now out of hospital, and no deaths were linked to the outbreak.

A total of 1,581 children have been cleared to return to daycare.

The central kitchen in Calgary, believed to have been the source of the outbreak, is still under a closure order.

A list of criteria must be met before it's able to reopen, including a food safety plan which must be submitted to AHS.
