The Dewdney Players group theatre took to the stage last week for the first of three weekends of top-notch one-act entertainment.

The first two weeks feature local talent but the final weekend, running April 1st and 2nd, brings in six different performances from all over southern Alberta including Airdrie, Canmore, an independent group from Okotoks as well as music from Dwight Forseth.

An Evening of One-Act Plays is a collection of short plays and musical talent all highlighting locals on the Rotary Performing Arts Center (RPAC) stage.

Dayna Coles, director for I'm Herbert is excited to bring back this bite-sized art form after years of COVID-related delays and cancellations.

"So we started rehearsing December 2019 in hopes of performing for the 2020 One Act festival and we were two weeks from opening and then, well, we all know what happened. So here we are a couple of years later."

The evening of eclectic entertainment covers a diverse mix of themes and styles says Coles.

"They’re shorter plays. Sometimes they're monologues, sometimes they have multiple characters and they can be quite provocative or very funny, and they tackle a lot of different issues in a short amount of time versus sitting through an entire play. So it kind of gives you a little taste of a bunch of different things."

Similar to a short film festival but with live actors in front of you.

She is excited to finally bring I'm Herbert to the stage after years of delay and show off the talent of Ed and Debbie Sands.

"Essentially, it is about an elderly couple that can't remember who is who. They are just the most precious couple and their dynamic on stage in this production is quite spectacular, it's a really cute show."

This showcase of thrilling comedy and chilling dramas puts actors in a competition setting with the possibility of moving on to the Provincial One-Act Festival in Camrose happening May 27th and 28th.

A feat the Dewdney Players have tacked before. In 2018 the production of Alien Boy staring Stephen Buoninsegni and directed by Fiorentina Maione received three awards and rave reviews at the Provincial One-Act Festival in Fort McMurray.

Tickets are available for both An Evening of One-Act Plays as well as the ADFA Foothills Region One-Act Play Festival can be found on the Dewdney Players website or at the door (space permitting)
