Foothills County council has given first reading to a bylaw that would allow for a cannabis store at the Heritage Pointe mall on Dunbow Road.

Reeve Delilah Miller says they can't decide whether they're allowed but they can determine where they can go.

"Council gave first reading just for that specific area and of course if there's applications that come in for other hamlets, we'll deal with them as they come in, but I think it was the general feeling that it is a legal substance and it's viewed along the same lines as alcohol and cigarettes which are also sold in that mall, " she says.

Miller says they're not the regulator of which businesses are allowed to setup shop; they can only deal with land use issues so that businesses are put in the right spot.

Any store owner would have to adhere to provincial and federal regulations governing them.
