It's the X-Games meets Rodeo all rolled into one, and it happening at the Calgary Polo club in Dewinton.

The first ever Skijordue event where horses will pull competitors on skis and snowboard over jumps while flying at speeds over 30 to 40 KM/H.

Skijordue is based on the sport Skijoring but with a special twist.

Organizer Sam Mitchell says she along with her husband Graham are combining two of their favourite hobbies... riding horses and enjoying fondue.

"We lived in Zurich for a couple of winters and we kind of missed the Après ski scene and we love fondue and we thought well what more fun thing to do in the winter then get a bunch of people together with fast horses and eat cheese," she says.

Mitchell says the event will see cowboys and alpine enthusiasts have some fun and more importantly raise money for a strong local cause.

"We're the Alberta Skijor Society and we're really just focused on raising some money for Prairie Skies Equine Assisted Therapy Program and creating a venue for the sport where people can learn and do it in a safe and competitive way."

With the weather expecting to be ideal for the weekend Mitchell says Skijordue is fun for the whole family.

"Entries were sold out in a week, so we'd love to have spectators come out and that way we can gauge the interest and hopefully do further events and more than just one a year."

Entry to Skijordue is $5 and all proceeds go towards the Prairie Skies Equine Assisted Therapy Program which helps adults and children with physical, mental, social, and emotional disabilities.

Skijordue begins at 11:00 a.m. with the gates opening at the Polo Club at 10:30 a.m.
