Residents in Okotoks and the Foothills are wondering what will happen with gas prices in the coming months, as talks continue regarding large price hikes.

Senior Petroleum Analyst for Gas Buddy dot com, Dan McTeague, says there are a couple of contributing factors to rising gas prices.

"Oil going to $75 a barrel, that would be good enough for a 12 or 13 cent a litre increase. It wouldn't take much to bring us up to that level, circumstances like prices going up to reflect higher demand south of the border. Also, another factor could be, simple things like weakness of the Canadian dollar," he said.

McTeague adds the upcoming Provincial election could have a significant impact on future fuel pricing.

"There will obviously be some back and forth on the carbon tax. Should that be dropped, however brief it may be until Ottawa re-imposes it because they're adamant about making sure that everybody pays for the weather. We're now seeing a potential drop of seven cents a litre, if one of the parties is successful in getting its point across and cancels the carbon tax," he said.

Albertans could see price hikes to approximately $1.25 per litre in the months to come with the cost of oil, even with the low cost discounters.
