You may have noticed in the Town of Okotoks that more vehicles are being stopped in communities since the 40 km/h by-law came into effect this month.

There's two ways the conversation is going in town, one showing some confusion on when the actually 40 zone begins and ends, followed by responses showing the lack of others failing to comply with the rules after fair warning by the Town.

Emelia Laughin says that she understands the by-law is in effect but the signs can be misleading.

"It looks like a speed limit sign," she says.  "So when you're coming up to it you wonder where the slow down to 40 km/h sign go? Did I miss that? Then you realize it's just an information sign, it's just for me a longer sign  that says 'In the Town Of Okotoks anywhere unless posted' should be built."

Mel Cyrenne says those getting pulled over and being ticketed have had enough warning and information given to them on where the speed limits change that they should know better.

"Past behaviours dictate future laws," she says. "I guess it should be baffling to the people in the Town of Okotoks is 'Why is that every other town in this province has a 50 km/h if our is 40?' Since when does our Municipal Officers have to put the kid gloves on average everyday drivers it's because they don't follow the posted speed limits to begin with."

Laughin who makes many trips in town says the signs still catch her off guard at times when re-entering town.

"I think that 40 km/h sign that they talk about is actually more of an information sign than an actual speed limit sign because when I drive past it at first 'I worry it's already 40 km/h but actually not quite."

Cyrenne adds that the Town shouldn't have to adjust their signs when the warnings where given back in the early fall.

"I don't think you need to throw good money to clarify and make a new billboard and say hey this is who we are. New people coming into town they automatically assume 50 km/h, I see that sign having never been in the Town of Okotoks and I know that Town of Okotoks wants me to drive 40 km/h, I see 60 km/h sign unless otherwise posted because that's what it says."
