The realignment of Veterans Way may be squashed but the Towns plan for the Veterans Way Pedestrian Corridor Project is moving forward.

The project plans on adding a multi-use pathway on the west side, expanding the existing sidewalk on the east side and possible upgrades to the Frederick Pyrce Memorial park.

Municipal engineer Marly Oness says the town has to now revisit the Frederick Memorial Park design after the realignment deferral.

"Now that the realignment of Elma street is deferred it may change some of the elements planned for the Frederick Pyrce Memorial park upgrades. So we are going to revisit the design and after that we will seek public input into what we will do with the park. I do expect there to be upgrades in there but it might look a little different now with all the other design changes we're going to make around the intersection now."

Oness says the decision to scrap the realignment may keep them from saving a chunk of change.

"We have an approved budget of $1.6 million, without the realignment there might be some savings, potentially maybe $100,000 to $150,000 in savings. But we really won't know until the project has been tendered and we see actual tendered costs."

With the addition of the multi-use pathway for walkers, bikers, skateboarders, etc. Veterans Way will lose five parking spots along the street.

Tender packages are planned to be sent out within this week and construction is projected to start mid August.
