The Okotoks Water Rebate Program still has plenty left to give.

Of the $50,000 the fund started with, about $30,000 has been used.

Dawn Smith, Sustainability Coordinator with the Town of Okotoks, says it's been a bit of a slower year so far for the program but that it's positive. She says she's seen more people use the program but that smaller purchases are being made through it. Normally the fund is used up by the fall.

Smith says the town also altered some of the items available for rebate.

"We took a couple items off that in the past ate up the rebate really fast, such as appliances," she says. "Obviously those are thousand dollar purchases so they maxed out at $200 right away. They ate up the fund last year right away.... the reason we took those off was not because of the funding but because there wasn't significant water conservation savings with those devices."

Each year the program gets modified to make sure items that substantially reduce water are included.

Smith says there's a few items she's seeing come through the program more frequently.

"Definitely one of the most popular purchases this year is mulch which is followed by toilets. Mulch purchases, unless someone is doing their whole yard, they're not spending the $400 to get the $200 rebate because it's 50 percent, so people are making purchases in the $200 range then it's averaging about $100 rebate."

The water rebate program is available until the fund runs out or until Dec. 31.
