Okotoks residents wanting to take part in this year's water rebate program should act fast.

The deadline for the program is Dec. 31 but at the rate it's being used it's estimated it'll be full in another month or two as it's already over 50% subscribed.

Dawn Smith, Sustainability Coordinator for the Town of Okotoks, says this will be the last year the program focuses on indoor savings.

"We're going to be focusing very heavily next year on outdoor water use because it is our main issue... and 40% of water use in the summer is outdoor so that's almost half of your water usage going on your lawn. We will be doing more items for outdoor use and no more interior items."

This means it's also the last year low flow toilets will be included in the program.

Smith adds the rebate program covers a variety of other items.

"Other items that you can get a rebate for are rain barrels, drought tolerant turf so you can get a rebate on turf that includes less than 30% Kentucky blue grass, and also rain sensors for irrigation systems which is also very beneficial so you're not watering when it's raining."

Mulch is one of the most popular rebate items where residents can receive 50% rebate up to a maximum of $200.
