Voter turnout for the Okotoks Municipal Elections was up this year.

Between three advance polling days, and election day the total voter turnout was 5,672, of approximately 19,000 enumerated voters.

In 2013, the total voter turnout was 4,619, about 25% of eligible voters, this year that grew to 29%.

Cathy Duplessis, Legislative and Policy Services Manager says turnout was actually greater than she had anticipated.

"I think our turnout was a little bit better than we expected, we had a great turnout at our advance polls on the Saturday before election day, we were steady. We're happy to see that voters are engaged, and are coming out to vote for their representatives."

Duplessis says the turnout was actually very good compared to previous elections, she adds unfortunately Municipal voter turnout has historically been lower than what is seen during Provincial and Federal Elections.

"Personally I think that relates to party politics, and how there's party platforms at the Provincial and Federal level. It is unfortunate because I feel that your Municipal Council is the one that provides services that affect your life every day, like garbage pick up and water services. I feel it's very important to engage as a voter and have a say on who you want to represent you at the council table."
