It's good news from the Town of Okotoks Universal Cart Program Report.

The report shows that of the over 400 people surveyed, 71% indicated they're satisfied with the program, 84% reported they're using the blue cart, and 76% reported using the green cart.

Paul Lyons, waste services manager for the Town, says the introduction of the new textile and styrofoam recycling at the Eco Centre is another sign of success.

"It really identifies the commitment of residents because the clothing and styrofoam they're taking directly to the Eco Centre, so recognizing that these materials should no longer go into a garbage cart."

Since January, the Eco Centre has collected 6.5 tonnes of clothing and 1.5 tonnes of expanded polystyrene.

The report also shows there's been a 47% increase in the amount of organics diverted from the landfill.

Lyons says this number is a testament to the community's participation.

"It really shows commitment from all residents overall to be a part of this initiative, truly something that's promoted by our council so they should also take some credit for taking the step to approve and implement this program when they did last year."

Overall, Okotoks residents are now putting 100 tonnes less garbage into the landfill.
