An initiative to help reduce the amount of waste heading to the landfill hits Okotoks neighbourhoods this weekend.

The Parade of Garage Sales takes place Saturday with Curbside Giveaway Day going on Sunday from 9a.m.- 4p.m.

Jinny Toffelmire, Environment and Sustainability Specialist for the Town of Okotoks, says there is a couple tips for residents so they can have a smooth experience on Sunday.

"If you're going to participate in this wonderful event, label your items with something that says 'free', so people need to know that the items out on your curb are something they're allowed to take away. Also, if you're going to participate, any items that might be in your front yard that could be mistaken as something that could be taken away, maybe tuck those away for the day."

Toffelmire says there are a few items that shouldn't be placed on the curb.

"Maybe this is common sense, but items infested with bedbugs, maybe you're switching out your toilets in your bathrooms, no one wants your old toilets. Dangerous or hazardous goods like batteries, cleaning fluids, anything with a sharp edge, keep those to yourself and dispose of them properly. There's a few baby items too that you need to check out the Consumer Product Safety Bureau on to make sure those things can or cannot be given away."

The Town is asking that any items that do not get picked up are brought back indoors by 7p.m. on Sunday as they will not be collected with regular curbside waste collection.
