The sudden melting of snow and ice has resulted in streets flooding in Okotoks.

On Thursday morning a section of Southridge Drive was narrowed down to one lane due to flooding.

Melanie Heemeryck, communications specialist for the Town, says the water is a result of snow melt being blocked by frozen catch basins.

"The record high temperatures caused an extremely rapid melt of the heavy snowfall from last week. The freeze and thaw temperatures that we typically experience during a warm spell or chinook can cause the town's catch basins to freeze."

Heemeryck says Town crews are working to resolve the problem.

"Currently our transportation crews are steaming and opening up the frozen catch basins in a prioritized manor. They have a list started from those that've called in with street drainage issues and they've been out monitoring the areas."

When it comes to avoiding flooding around homes Heemeryck reccomends foundations are kept clear of snow and water spouts are flipped down to ensure proper drainage.

Any concerns with street flooding can be reported to Town of Okotoks Transportation at (403) 938- 4372.
