It's all about the environment this week in Okotoks.

Special events are planned throughout the week to celebrate sustainability.

Town of Okotoks Conservation Educator Toni Matthews says the events are geared towards raising awareness about taking care of our environment and reducing pollution.

"I hope they realize that there are ways that you can divert your waste and use it in different ways, rather than just throwing it out," Matthews says. "You can exchange it with someone else, you can recycle, you can compost, you can make crafts and just learn that there are good things about the environment and we need to be sustainable here."

She points out that the host country for this year's Environment Week is India, adding the worldwide theme is 'Beat Plastic Pollution' with a focus on plastic pollution in the ocean.

Events held in Okotoks will include river walks, a wild Okotoks day, an ongoing photo contest and visits to high schools. Matthew says the events are free and fun and there will be lots of activities for everyone.
