With Okotoks continuing grow the capacity for the water treatment plant will begin to push limits.

The current plant was designed for a limited growth scenario which Okotoks no longer fits.

Municipal engineer Marley Oness says the town still has some time to find the best solution for the increasing population.

"We're approaching its capacity within the next few years so because of that we've done a feasibility study to review what the options are for our wastewater moving forward into the future in consideration of the annexation that will be taking place."

He says there's a preferred option for when the plant reaches its limit down the road.

"Expanding the current plant with the introduction of some newer treatment technologies and we do have a challenge, we will have to demonstrate to the province that there are no detrimental impacts on the river by doing a plant expansion with the release of additional treated water into the Sheep River."

Research will continue to learn the best way to accommodate annexation in the town.
