An Okotoks Town Councillor is looking for another term on the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association's Board of Directors.

Tanya Thorn currently represents Towns South, is part of the Environment and Sustainability Board, and is also hoping to join AUMA's executive as Vice President of Towns.

Thorn says she feels like just got her feet wet after her first term and would love to be a part of the group with what's to come.

"We've got some really important work coming forward especially with the provincial election that's coming. We have a really unique opportunity I think to increase the profile of municipalities and I think it's important to have strong people sitting at that board table that can talk about the benefits of municipalities and why municipalities need to be partners with the province."

Highlights this past year with the association for Thorn include working on the Municipal Government Act and MSI funding.

Thorn says she feels being on the board of directors with the association has benefited her as a councillor.

"The resources that are there, even just from the skill set that sits at the board table, it's been hugely valuable for me to be able to ask questions of those peers and colleagues of 'Hey, have you guys dealt with this?' or 'How do you guys manage this?', so it's allowed me to bring some other stuff back, not only to my municipality but to provide answers to some of the municipalities in the south."

Okotoks Town Council voted unanimously at their meeting on Sept. 10 in support of Thorn seeking another term with the AUMA.

The election will take place at the AUMA Convention in Red Deer on September 28.
