One sure sign of things getting back to normal is theatres are re-opening.

The Canyon Meadows Cinema and the Lux in Banff opened last weekend while the Wales Theatre in High River will open their doors again starting Friday, June 19.

Owner Syed Kidwai says unfortunately, you won't be seeing any new blockbusters for a few weeks.

"Until then I'm afraid, we're going to be playing the old favourites. For the time being we'll only be open on the weekend's Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That's what it'll be for the next couple of weeks."

Kidwai says because there are no new movies out there to see right now, he decided to go with a family friendly double feature with "Sing" and "Mama Mia."

"You know something family and then "Mama Mia" being a musical and ladies night out you know, while we're still keeping our safe distancing. A double bill, come on in, pay one price and stay for both or watch only one and let's see how it goes."

Kidwai says he'll stick with double features for the next few weeks until new movies start to come out.

Kidwai kept the mood light during the lockdown by changing his marquee every week with some jokes or funny quotes.

He says it made sense.

"In times like this I think we can all use a little bit of a smile. If we cannot laugh at ourselves, who can we. So, I just thought, I just took, put it on and put a smile to your face. And then when I saw how much a response, and a positive response I was getting, I decided to do it every week."

Kidwai says he didn't come up with all of it himself as he had help from other theatre owners and the public.

The marquee at the Wales Theatre in High River kept things light during the lockdown.

Okotoks Cinemas is running "Sing" and "1917" this weekend, with "Back to the Future I, II and III" with trivia Tuesday, June 23, Wednesday June 24 and Thursday, June 25.

All shows are $5.

The big theatres in Calgary won't open until Friday, June 26.
