Nominations for the Annual Volunteer Leadership Awards are now open.

Sian Anderson, FCSS and Volunteer Administrator for the Town of Okotoks, says the event is a volunteer recognition event.

"It gives residents a chance to really appreciate and recognize the volunteers around them," Anderson said.

There are two different types of nominations for the awards. The first is the Leader of Tomorrow award which is for anyone in elementary, junior, or senior high school with three different categories for the three different age brackets.

The other nomination is for the Heart of Okotoks.

Anderson says that you can nominate an individual, individual group, sports team, groups of parents such as a PTA, or any group in Okotoks that is volunteering.

"The idea is that these awards recognize not only those who volunteer but those who really promote volunteerism and show leadership in volunteering."

To nominate someone for a Volunteer Leadership award a nomination form needs to be filled out and a profile on the nominee should be submitted as well.

"Basically you give a description of all the amazing things the person you are nominating is doing and why they deserve this recognition," Anderson says.

The event happens during National Volunteer week which is Apr. 10-16.

All nominees names will be printed in the Western Wheel on Apr. 13 with the award ceremony being held that night.

The nomination dead line is Mar. 14.
