Internet speeds in Okotoks are getting a significant boost thanks to Telus.

It was announced Monday that Telus is investing $34.7 million to install PureFibre in the community which means Telus customers will be able to experience download speeds and uploads up to 150 MB.

The investment is part of Telus' commitment to invest $4.2 billion throughout Alberta between 2017 and 2020, at no cost to taxpayers.

Bill Robertson, Mayor of Okotoks, says this will help the town to keep pace with other communities.

"It's the way of the 21st century, the internet speeds are greatly needed with all the various technologies that require high speed internet," he explains. "This basically puts us at the forefront, keeps pace with other communities that are perhaps getting this right now so it's very important we have this access in our community."

Robertson adds this is something the Town has been working on for a number of years.

"We've been looking at broadband, the dark fibre, for probably two years now so it's great to see one of the incumbents come forward and offer these services potentially by the end of this year."

Construction is expected to begin this spring and once completed, Telus predicts the build will have connected more than 90 per cent of homes and businesses in Okotoks.

The announcement was made at the Telus Future Home on display at the Okotoks Recreation Centre.

The home highlights some of the future capabilities the pure fibre internet has to offer and is on display for residents to go and tour until Mar. 15.
