Foothills School Division wants to make sure parents are kept up to speed on social media.

A social media parent presentation is being held Thursday night at Oilfields High School with expert Paul Davis.

Scott Carey, principal at Oilfields, says the goal of the seminar is to open students and parents eyes to the realities of technology.

"It's the reality of living today, it's the idea like it or not our digital footprint is ever present and ever permanent and the reality is literally every footstep is almost recorded in a digital matter and what we want to do is just expose students to the reality of here's an amazing tool but there's a dark side to that."

Carey adds times have changed and erasing content isn't as easy and hitting a button.

"It's a different rule book now and everything is permanent," he says. "That's one of the biggest thing I find that students don't necessarily understand, because they push delete on their keyboard doesn't mean these things go away, they're there and you don't have to look too far."

The presentation takes place in the high school's drama room at 7:00 p.m.

Three more presentations are planned in the spring, including one with Brian Burke, president of hockey operations for the Calgary Flames, on raising kids and working through stereotypes.
