You may have noticed while trying to fill up your vehicle at certain local gas station you can't even get a drop out of the pump.

Petro Canada outlets have felt the brunt of the Fort McMurray wildfires leading to gas shortages all over Western Canada.

Suncor energy has had to prioritize its fuel supplies leaving some spots saying sorry to customers.

Senior Petroleum Analyst at GasBuddy.com Dan McTeague says there's more to the shortage than just Fort McMurray's situation.

"The Suncor refinery in Edmonton has made it very clear that they are in no position provide adequate amounts of gasoline especially to their own stations and that's affecting the Petro Canada dispositions of gas stations all the way to Winnipeg and that's a wide area."

Local Petro Canada stations have been out of order before but that doesn't mean they'll be out for a long period of time but that has lead to a significant jump in prices.

McTeague says until Suncor can get things back on track, motorists will continue to feel the pinch at the pumps.

"As long as the shortage persists the high prices will remain but it doesn't mean it won't go much higher than this and if anything, if Suncor can get itself back on a level playing field and get back to producing it's likely that we'll see prices start to drop slowly but surely but for now we're still far enough away from that happening."

McTeague does remind all of those wondering on the chances of future shortages at other stations not associated with Petro Canada that as of right now their refineries are working and producing at normal levels.

"It's not like everyone is going to run out at the same time but panic buying could have been an intended effect in making a difficult situation that much worse. There will be plenty of gasoline to go around it's just that we may have the inconvenience of several stations closing down unless some other refinery wants to tell us that they're having trouble but I don't see that happening right now."
