MyCityCare Okotoks' annual Stuff the Bus campaign helped families in need send children back to school.

They assisted about 18 families by giving out 40 backpacks with supplies. This is an increase compared to last year which saw about 30 backpacks and 12 families.

Meghan Harvey, Director for MyCityCare Okotoks, says they had items leftover which are not going to waste.

"We've got some donations that were leftover so we've had a few school councillors that have been calling us up and they've been telling us if teachers have had students come in without the supplies so we've been giving them to teachers so they can help their students which is great to do as well."

Harvey says the support from those who donated items and their time means a great deal to the organization.

"It's a lot of work and it's a lot of work for our volunteers, but when you have the encouragement from your town and you can see the families you're helping it makes a huge difference with your energy levels and it spurs you on."

MyCityCare is now looking ahead to Christmas where they host their Shop of Wonders free shopping event for families who struggle financially.

Those who are interested in donating, becoming a community sponsor, or a drop-off location for Shop of Wonders can contact Harvey by emailing meghan757@hotmail.com.
