A Strathcona-Tweedsmuir student has punched his ticket to an international public speaking championship in China.

Zaki Lakhani earned first prize at the Canadian National Speaking competition in Manitoba two weeks ago, and will now represent Canada in Shanghai next spring.

Lakhani humbly credits his teachers and peers for their help in getting him to where he is today.

"This is not about me, because these types of accomplishments are not possible without the support of some really incredible coaches at the school that I've worked with for ages now, and my peers as well."

For Lakhani, public speaking has given him an opportunity to build several important skills.

"The real fulfillment I get out of it is sharing important messages and stories, and emphasizing the power of communication, not just as a life skill, but as something that implores you to critically think, and share your opinions."

This will be Lakhani's third time representing Canada on the world stage, and the opportunity to visit China isn't lost on him.

"You can't go to China and miss the Great Wall, and the Terracotta Army, and stuff like that. It's such a vibrant culture, and a forward-thinking society in terms of technology."

The World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship will take place in Shanghai in April 2020.
