International Volunteer Day, and initiative started by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, saw six Albertans receive Stars of Alberta awards for their community efforts.

Emma Moore of Strathmore received recognition, as well as five other Albertans from Brownvale, Devon, St. Albert and Edmonton.

Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism for the Government of Alberta, says, "This year's recipients embody the very best of our province and the amazing family volunteers that are the heart of our communities."

The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards are part of the Alberta Government's efforts to recognize and encourage Albertans to support community initiatives.

Since the program's inception in Alberta in 2000, 115 Alberta volunteers have been honoured with this award.

The awards also focus on a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspiring Albertans to make volunteering a central part of their lives.

The awards coincide with International Volunteer Day on December fifth.
